Supporting Offshore Construction with NDT Expertise

The Project

The INPEX Ichthys LNG Project is one of the largest and most complex natural gas projects in the world, with operations spanning multiple continents, including South Korea. The project involves the development of offshore facilities to extract natural gas and an onshore liquefied natural gas (LNG) processing facility in Australia.

Mactech was engaged to support a key phase of the project at the Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) shipyard in South Korea, where critical modules for the Ichthys offshore facilities were being fabricated and assembled. Mactech was tasked with providing specialised NDT (Non-Destructive Testing) personnel to ensure that all structural components met the stringent safety and quality standards required for offshore operations.

The Challenge

Given the complexity and scale of the INPEX Ichthys project, several unique challenges had to be addressed:

Large-Scale International Mobilisation
Mactech needed to quickly mobilise a team of highly skilled NDT inspectors from various regions to work in South Korea, coordinating with the local workforce and project management teams.

Stringent Safety and Quality Standards
The offshore modules being built at SHI shipyard were subject to extremely rigorous safety, quality, and compliance requirements. Mactech’s personnel had to ensure these standards were met without causing any delays in the construction timeline.

Cultural and Operational Integration
Integrating a team of international workers into an established South Korean workforce posed both operational and cultural challenges. It required close coordination and strong communication with local teams to ensure smooth operations.

The Solution

Mactech leveraged its extensive expertise in international workforce solutions to implement a tailored, efficient strategy, ensuring the project’s demands were met with precision and professionalism.

Specialised NDT Workforce Deployment
Mactech successfully mobilised a team of experienced and certified NDT inspectors to South Korea, ensuring they were fully equipped to perform high-quality inspections of the offshore modules. The personnel provided were skilled in a wide range of NDT techniques, including ultrasonic testing, radiographic testing, and magnetic particle inspection, all critical to the safety and reliability of the project.

Seamless International Coordination
Mactech managed the logistical challenges of international mobilisation by ensuring smooth travel arrangements, handling visas, and aligning schedules with the SHI shipyard to avoid any delays in the fabrication process. This ensured that the team was ready to work as soon as they arrived on site.

Focus on Safety and Quality Compliance
Mactech’s NDT team rigorously adhered to the project’s safety and quality protocols. The team worked closely with SHI’s internal quality control department to ensure that all components met the required specifications and industry standards, helping to maintain the project’s timelines without compromising on safety.

Effective Cross-Cultural Collaboration
By fostering strong communication and teamwork between Mactech’s international NDT inspectors and the local workforce, we ensured a harmonious and productive working environment. Regular meetings and training sessions facilitated knowledge sharing and ensured alignment on project goals.
